There's lots to see and do at GeorgeFest. Taking place from 15 August to 2 September, this vibrant summer festival will include guided walks, fascinating talks, open-air cinema and even delicious Georgian food!

Richmond's Georgian festival is back and it's even better and bigger than before! Taking place from 15 August to 2 September, GeorgeFest16 will have something for everyone with a wide range of themed events and activities.

As one of the town's key Georgian treasures, The Georgian Theatre Royal will be the focal point of the festival and our organised events are highlighted below. Many take place in the newly opened Paul Iles Learning Centre, as well as in the main auditorium:

  • Georgian Inventions and Antiques - Monday 15 August, 7.30pm: A fascinating talk on what the Georgians did for us by antiques expert David Elstob, followed by a roadshow-style session where members of the audience can present their own objects from any period.
  • The Rise and Fall of Georgian York - Thursday 18 August, 7.30pm: Julia Manders will reveal what made York the social hub of the North in Georgian times.
  • Portrait of a Lady: The History Wardrobe - Friday 19 August, 7.30pm: An enchanting view of the creation of beauty in the late 18th century with anecdotes about Georgian life with the ever-popular team from the History Wardrobe.
  • From the Georgian Kitchen - Wednesday 24 August, 2pm: Food historian Jane Sammells will give a fascinating insight into how, what and when the Georgians ate.
  • The Woodland Scene (viewing and talk) - Wednesday 24 August, 7.30pm: See the recently restored Woodland Scene - believed to be Britain's oldest surviving stage scenery - followed by a talk by the conservator Frances Downing.
  • An Acting Brotherhood: Georgian Freemasons on the Northern Stage - Friday 26 August, 7.30pm: What did Georgian actors and freemasons have in common? Declan McCormack invites you to explore some little-known connections.
  • Race Week in York 1765: Who Would Be A Theatre Manager? - Monday 29 August, 7.30pm: The York Theatre was a popular place of entertainment especially during the social high of race week. But in 1765 manager Tate Wilkinson faced serious problems. Ian Small tells more!

During the festival, the Theatre will also be open for 'behind-the-scenes' guided tours every hour from 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday and from 12 noon to 3pm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday and there will be special family activity tours on Friday 19 and Friday 26 August at 10.30am and 2pm.

Full details of all GeorgeFest16 events can be found online and GeorgeFest16 leaflets are available from the Box Office.
