The Georgian Theatre Royal is offering an exciting trio of 'Le Tour' events.
To celebrate the arrival of Le Tour de France in Yorkshire, we are hosting three special themed events that will inspire francophiles, cycling enthusiasts or indeed anyone just wanting to join the county’s biggest party!
The first event takes place on Saturday 28 June at 7.30pm when music group Djangologie will sweep audiences back into the 1930’s swing era by recreating the sounds of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and the famous Hot Club du France. This hugely popular North East-based quartet do much more than pay homage to the great ensembles of the past – they breathe new life into it with tight arrangements and original compositions. It is definitely an inspired rather than deferential homage.
In contrast to the state-of-the-art brilliance of the machines used in the 2014 Tour de France, vintage bicycles are the theme of a film that will be screened on Sunday 29 June at 2.00pm. A Day Out is a charming comedy piece set in Edwardian Yorkshire that follows a cycling club’s outing to Bolton Abbey in 1911. It was Yorkshire playwright Alan Bennett’s first television play and was directed in black and white in 1972 by the highly acclaimed Stephen Frears.
The film is packed with incident as the club members – from across the social spectrum – interact with each other and the locals they meet. The audience will be able to look out for regional landmarks as the action unfolds. The afternoon will be rounded off with tea and scones provided by The Friends of The Georgian Theatre Royal.
Finally, on the evening of the Grand Depart itself (Saturday 5 July at 7.30pm) Encore! will conjure up all the atmosphere of the French café-cabaret with a moving and passionate presentation of some of the best-loved songs of France, including Edith Piaf, Jaques Brel, Moustaki and Brassens. This talented local duo comprise vocalist Maggi Stratford and Daniel Bowater – known to many as the Musical Director for our pantomimes - on piano, accordion and guitar.
