The Theatre is going to be featured in the Channel 5 documentary - Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning - screened on Friday 13 July at 8pm.
When Channel 5’s light-hearted documentary series following five celebrities as they travel around the UK staying in caravans is televised later this month, several local landmarks will be featured on their route, including back-stage scenes at The Georgian Theatre Royal.
DJ Tony Blackburn and pop singer Sonia joined forces with actors Colin Baker, Todd Carty and Sherrie Hewson to experience life in campsites and the freedom of the open road as they visited the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales in the latest of the series Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning.
The route took in a visit to the market town of Richmond, where Colin, Todd and Sherrie were filmed taking a tour of The Georgian Theatre Royal – the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form.
One of the Theatre’s volunteer guides, Gerry Broadbent, took the celebrity group on a full tour of the grade 1 historic building and regaled them with stories about its colourful past and life in 18th-century England.
“Our celebrity guests were brilliant to show around and took a keen interest in the history of the Theatre and the actors that have played here over the years,” said Gerry Broadbent. “They particularly enjoyed standing on the stage itself and even treated us to a few – rather impressive – Shakespearian soliloquies! Colin Baker was also very keen to hear about the Theatre’s legendary pantomime having starred in numerous festive productions himself during his career.”
As well as The Georgian Theatre Royal, the film crew visited the award-winning Angel’s Share Bakery at The Station and the town’s picturesque cobbled market place. They stayed at Akebar Caravan Park near Leyburn.
In an interview with TV Times about her experience of the show, Sherrie Hewson said: “What a beautiful country we live in. We travelled miles every day – and got lost every day! The Lake District was astounding and in Yorkshire we went on a steam train and to one of the oldest and tiniest theatres in the country.”
The Georgian Theatre Experience is open Monday to Saturday from mid-February to mid-November, with guided tours starting on the hour from 10.00am until 4.00pm. The attraction is one of the region’s leading tourist destinations and is consistently ranked no 1 of the 27 things to do in Richmond on Trip Advisor. Last year it received a Highly Commended Award in the prestigious White Rose Awards and has just been announced as a finalist in the 2018 competition for Yorkshire’s best small visitor attraction.
