Get ready for GeorgeFest!

Posted on 18/07/2017 by Helga Pearson in GeorgeFest

GeorgeFest is back this summer with an exciting two-week festival celebrating Richmond's rich Georgian heritage. Taking place from 12-26 August, GeorgeFest17 will have something for everyone with a wide range of themed events and activities.

As one of the town's key Georgian treasures, The Georgian Theatre Royal will be a focal point of the festival and we are hosting a large number of exciting events including our special costumed tours, taking place daily from 14-28 August.

Our first event is a talk by Madeleine Pelling on Monday 14 August. She will be looking at Celebrity and Taste at the 18th Century Auction. We also have presentations by Caroline Stanford who will be revealing the fascinating history of Culloden Tower in Political Meaning or Pure Folly? Culloden Tower and Other Georgian Landmarks on Wednesday 16 August. This will be followed by Professor Tiffany Stern with Johnson, Garrick and the Fight for Shakespeare on Friday 18 August; and Ian Small with Mrs Inchbald's Shoe Repairs: Actor's Travels on the Northern Circuit on Wednesday 23 August

Back by popular demand is The History Wardrobe on Saturday 19 August with their outrageous Bad Girls and Bonnets - a bold, brash and beautiful celebration of Jane Austen's wicked women. This will provide a truly revelatory look at clothes and crime in the 18th century when stocking theft carried serious penalties!

Also on stage (Friday 25 August) will be a community performance of The Fortress on the Danube - a hit melodrama by Guilbert de Pixerecourt that combines musical flourishes, comedy and high drama in a grand theatrical spectacle.

Finally, rounding off the festival is An Evening of Georgian Theatre Ballads on Saturday 26 August when Grammy-nominated vocalist Vivien Ellis and multi-instrumentalist Giles Lewin will bring to life these wonderful tales of romance, crime and comedy.

Full details of the festival can be found online and leaflets are available from the Box Office and generally around the town.
