Lewis Carroll goes under the spotlight

The life of one of the world’s best-loved authors but most enigmatic of men is the subject of a moving and compelling show to be held on Saturday 19 September at 7.30pm.

Crocodiles in Cream provides a fascinating portrait of Lewis Carroll, drawing from his diaries, letters, poems and stories and takes place in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The famous author (born 1832 as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) has strong links with the area as his family moved to the Rectory at Croft when he was 11-years-old and a year later he was sent to Richmond Grammar School (now Richmond School) before completing his pre-University education at Rugby.

The show (whose title is taken from one of Lewis Carroll’s poems) explores the life of the author, taking the audience into the world – half-dream, half-reality – of this many-sided figure, mathematician, logician, photographer, poet and story-teller. It is recommended for ages 12 and above.

Written, devised and directed by David Horlock, Crocodiles in Cream has already been performed worldwide as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, including performances at London’s National Theatre, and venues in Los Angeles and New York.

It is acted by Kevin Moore whose recent television roles include Prior Anthony in the series World Without End adapted from Ken Follett’s book and McCarthy in the BBC sitcom Father Figure. Other credits include: Heartbeat, Doctors, the Bill, Silent Witness, Father Ted and Evil Under the Sun.

Reviews have been exceptional:

“The mood of the piece – warm, delicate and sepia-hued – lingers long in the memory.” Time Out

“Moore is supremely entertaining. A masterful piece of work.” The Stage

Tickets are priced from £7-£15 and can be purchased at the Box Office on 01748 825252 or online.
