Film-makers documenting the life of composer George Frideric Handel based themselves at the Georgian Theatre Royal on 24 and 25 February and used dozens of local people as audience extras.

The theatre is one of several venues in Germany, Italy and the UK to be used by Groberg Films in their dramatization of the story of Handel and his famous work the Messiah.

Steve Bache, the film’s location manager, explained why they chose to come to Richmond, “There are very few theatres in the UK that have authentic Georgian roots and this one has a full original interior so it was the best choice for us.”

Members of the public, as well as local musicians and singers, had an opportunity to take part in the production and got a taste of what it would have been like to wear full Georgian costumes, complete with wigs and stockings!

The film is scheduled to be aired on US cable channel BYU TV in December and will be available to view online at www.byutv.org.
