The Georgian Theatre has taken the plight of homeless cats to its heart during this year's pantomime Puss in Boots by teaming up with the local branch of the RSPCA at Great Ayton.

During the show’s four-week run, the Theatre is providing collection boxes for the animal charity which helps unwanted cats find new owners.

The story of Puss in Boots features the antics of a suave and sophisticated feline who uses trickery and superior brain power to gain good fortune and wealth for his human masters. Unfortunately, not all cats are able to look after themselves in this way and there are many held in rescue centres desperately in need of a loving, secure home.

The Great Ayton RSPCA centre has spaces for around 20 cats at any one time, including a large number of dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and other animals. Donations are essential to help them care for the animals and pay for veterinary care and rescue operations.

RSPCA staff member Robert Wilkinson, said: “We are very grateful to the Theatre’s pantomime audiences for giving so generously to our animals in need. It will certainly help us to look after them over the festive season and hopefully find them the good homes they deserve.”

Ironically, the actor (Jake England-Johns) playing the part of Puss is allergic to cats so he was unable to go and meet his furry counterparts face-to-face but he sent along two of his fellow, cat-loving cast members to make the closer acquaintance.

Katie Tranter and Joseph Mann are pictured with RSPCA worker Sarah Pattison and three of the cats currently waiting for homes at Great Ayton. They are 7-year-old Chester who is the centre’s longest feline resident and 5-month-old kittens Ronan and Tyke.

Puss in Boots runs until Sunday 4 January. Tickets are priced from £6 to £20 and are available from the Box Office on 01748 825252 or online.
