We are delighted to announce that The Georgian Theatre Experience was Highly Commended at last night's glittering White Rose Awards ceremony – the largest tourism event of its kind in the UK.
Organised by Welcome to Yorkshire, the ceremony was held at the First Direct Arena in Leeds and attended by over 1,000 people to celebrate the very best in tourism throughout the county. The Theatre was Highly Commended in the Small Attraction of the Year category for its popular guided heritage tours and recently opened exhibition area.
“This is a fantastic achievement for an attraction that only opened its doors just over a year ago,” said Mac Bryant, Chairman of the Theatre’s Board of Directors. “Visitors to our magical historic theatre are full of praise for The Georgian Theatre Experience but this ringing endorsement from Welcome to Yorkshire is truly the icing on the cake.”
During a visit to The Georgian Theatre Experience –- which was launched in Summer 2016 following a £500,000 redevelopment programme – people are given a ‘back-stage’ guided tour of the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form. There is also an opportunity to spend time in the new exhibition area and find out more about the lives of Georgian actors and their audiences through interactive displays, digital presentations and a wide range of exhibits.
On the night, the Theatre was pitched against five other finalists including Burton Constable Hall and Grounds (Skirlaugh); Kilnsey Park (Skipton); National Emergency Services Museum (Sheffield); Scampston Hall and Walled Garden (Malton) and Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (York). The Theatre received the Highly Commended award and Scampston Hall was the overall winner.
The Georgian Theatre Experience is open Monday to Saturday from mid-February to mid-November, with tours starting on the hour from 10am to 4pm. For further information, please call 01748 823710.
