The Georgian Theatre Experience has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious 2018 White Rose Awards – a year which saw entries up by 20 per cent.
Organised by Welcome to Yorkshire, the awards are the UK’s largest tourism event of its kind and reward the very best in the industry across 17 specialist categories. This year a record-breaking 170 entries were received from all parts of the county.
The Theatre is a finalist in the Small Attraction of the Year category for its popular guided heritage tours and museum. This shortlisting follows its Highly Commended award in last year’s competition.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be one of the finalists in this year’s White Rose Awards, especially against such tough competition that draws from the very top level of visitor attractions,” said Clare Allen, Chief Executive of The Georgian Theatre Royal. “It is also a huge boost to our hardworking volunteer guides whose enthusiasm and passion make a visit to The Georgian Theatre Experience so special.”
During a visit to The Georgian Theatre Experience, people are given a ‘back-stage’ guided tour of the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form where they can look around the distinctive three-tiered auditorium, discover hidden trap doors, peek inside stars’ dressing rooms, as well as tread the boards of the historic stage itself.
There is also an opportunity to spend time in the dedicated exhibition area to find out more about the lives of Georgian actors and their 18th century audiences through interactive displays, digital presentations and a wide range of exhibits.
The tours are all conducted by a team of over 30 volunteers whose individual insight into the Theatre’s fascinating history makes each visitor experience unique.
The winners and runners-up for the White Rose Awards will be announced at the Harrogate Convention Centre in November. The six other finalists in the Small Attraction of the Year category, include: Middleton Railway Trust, Spirit of Harrogate, Burton Constable Foundation, National Centre for Birds of Prey, Workhouse Museum and Grimm & Co.
Chairman of the White Rose Awards judges, Professor Colin Mellor, said: “Winning a White Rose Award is a real accolade for Yorkshire’s tourism businesses and the task of shortlisting has been harder than ever.”
The Georgian Theatre Experience is open Monday to Saturday from mid-February to mid-November, with tours starting on the hour from 10am to 4pm. For further information, please call 01748 823710 or visit the heritage and tours page of the website.
