Theatre opens its doors for Georgian Heritage Festival

Posted on 08/08/2014 by Helga Pearson in Georgian Heritage Festival The Georgian Theatre Royal

The Georgian Theatre Royal is celebrating its traditional roots and historical importance with a two-week Georgian Festival from Monday 11 August to Monday 25 August.

Let us take you back to 1788 - an age when candlelight lit the darkness and drama filled the empty nights!

Visitors will be able to see the theatre as it would have been in Georgian times. The entrance will be via the tiny original 1788 box office and only candle chandeliers will light the way.

Guides dressed in period costume will conduct hourly tours of the theatre that will go backstage to see the stage traps and winches in the machine room and the shutters and grooves for changing scenery. Expect tales from an era when the theatre was a den of vice and debauchery that distracted the lower classes of Richmond from their hard work!

A replica of Britain's oldest hand painted stage scenery will also be on stage and the original can be viewed in the exhibition space.

Tours are from 10am with the last tour at 4pm.
