Posted on 17/02/2015 by Helga Pearson

This year’s one-act play festival saw five exceptional performances by amateur drama groups competing in one of the preliminary rounds of The All England Theatre Festival (AETF).

Taking place over three evenings between 12-14 February, audiences were treated to a range of exciting productions, including entries from two youth groups.

The Zetland Cup for best overall production went to The Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre (pictured) for their production of Chatroom, a powerful play by Enda Walsh tackling issues of teenage life. The company also won awards for best technical achievement and stage management; best set design; and best youth theatre.

Best actor in a principal role went to Antony Scully of Leyburn Amateur Dramatic Society for his performance as Biffy in A Jolly Sinister Jape by Elliot Strange and best actress in a principal role went to Moira Mason who played Ophelia Le Bo Bo in the same production.  Mike Waldman of Leyburn Amateur Dramatic Society also picked up best supporting role for his portrayal of John Shakespeare in Gentlemen and Players by Vic Mills and this entry won the People’s Award for the best overall production as voted for by the audience.

Middlesbrough Little Theatre’s Sara Ramrekha was awarded the Adjudicator’s Cup for her portrayal of the American poet Sylvia Plath in David Spark’s thought-provoking play Dying As An Art and Karen Moore won best cameo performance in a supporting role in the same production.

The Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre will join the other winners of the Northern Area division in a semi-final held on 2 and 3 May at the Frazer Theatre in Knaresborough. The England final takes place at Harrogate Theatre on 6 June.
