World-premiere play is tribute to Coronation Street actor

Posted on 11/04/2014 by Helga Pearson

A play written originally for the late soap actor Gordon Langford Rowe will be performed at the Theatre on Saturday 19 April as a tribute to the star.

The Actor’s Apology is a comedy telling the true story of George Frederick Cooke, the 18th century actor who was often found drunk on stage and consequently was ordered by the theatre management to apologise to his audience.

It is being performed by the renowned Shakespearean actor Dean Taylor who was given the play by Gordon Langford Rowe’s widow, Dorothy, following her husband’s death from cancer in 2007. Langford Rowe was best known for his roles in Coronation Street and Last of the Summer Wine but also appeared in Emmerdale, Casualty and Heartbeat.

“Dorothy passed this play to me believing that I might make good use of it and it is my privilege to have had the opportunity to adapt this wonderful piece of writing (originally by John Cargill Thompson) into my one-man show. Gordon didn’t get the chance to perform the play so I am delighted to be able to premiere the piece as a tribute to my late friend.” said Dean Taylor.

“I am taking the play on tour across the UK but I am particularly looking forward to our date at The Georgian Theatre Royal, with its distinguished, historic reputation. Where better to tell the story of an 18th century actor but on a genuine 18th century stage?” he added.

The show itself promises a comical montage of autobiographical flashback, fast-forward, dream reality and surreality and ultimately a study of arrogance and insecurity. It will no doubt be hugely entertaining.
