Museum Week

Every year for a week in August, Britain’s oldest working theatre in its original form, The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, strips back to its essentials and recaptures an age when candlelight lit the dark and drama filled the empty nights. For one week only, the clock is turned back and visitors are transported to 1788.

The Georgian age and the history of the theatre are brought to life as guides lead tours in full Georgian costume. Visitors will be able to see shutters and groves for changing scenery, the stage traps and winches in the machine room, the wooden benches without the comfort of backs and cushions, and only candle chandeliers lighting the way. A replica of Britain’s oldest hand painted stage scenery is erected stage for viewing. The original remains on display in the exhibition space. Visitors can enter and pay at the tiny original 1788 box office.
