A fiery woman attends the Winter Palace, St Petersburg, for her interview with Tsar Alexander III. She begs the Tsar to lift the censorship on The Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoy’s argument for the virtues of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage.
The woman is the Countess Sonya Tolstoy and this play is her story - an account of the love she felt for Tolstoy despite all the trials of a fifty-year marriage, the birth of thirteen children and a husband who struggled with an idealistic celibacy he never managed to attain.
