A timeless tale of family, friendship and growing up will be brought to life later this month when STEPPS Theatre Group presents Little Women.
The well-established amateur dramatic company from Darlington will perform Helen Cox's stage adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's much-loved novel on Saturday 13 June, with performances at 2pm and 7.30pm.
Set during the American Civil War, Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – as they navigate the challenges of adolescence while their father serves away from home as a chaplain.
Guided by their devoted mother, Marmee, the sisters each dream of different futures. Meg longs for wealth and social status, Jo yearns to become a writer and experience the wider world, Beth finds happiness in music and family life, while Amy aspires to elegance and refinement.
As they encounter hardship, social expectations and the realities of growing up, the sisters' relationships with their neighbour Laurie, his tutor John Brooke and the formidable Aunt March help shape their journey from childhood to adulthood.
Published in 1868, Alcott's novel remains one of the most popular coming-of-age stories ever written, captivating generations of readers with its warmth, humour and memorable characters.
