Elysium Theatre Company returns with a powerful new staging of O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece Long Day’s Journey into Night on Saturday 16 May at 7pm.
We are delighted to welcome a major touring production of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night on Saturday 16 May at 7pm, as part of Elysium Theatre Company’s regional tour.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays of the 20th century, this Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its publication. Directed by Jake Murray, the production marks a welcome return to the Georgian Theatre Royal following Elysium’s previous highly regarded visits with The Moth and Othello.
Set in the summer of 1912, the play follows the Tyrone family as they reunite in their coastal New England home after years apart. What begins with hope soon unravels as long-buried tensions resurface and painful memories come to the fore. Over the course of a single day, the family is drawn back into a past they had hoped to escape, in a deeply moving exploration of love, loss and the complexities of family life.
Director Jake Murray said: “Long Day’s Journey into Night is our most ambitious production yet - one of the world’s greatest plays, and we are incredibly proud to be bringing it to audiences across the North East. It’s moving, beautiful and life-affirming, and we believe it will truly strike a chord.”
Elysium’s tour has already attracted attention from critics, highlighting the significance of bringing this landmark work to regional audiences, and offering theatre-goers a rare opportunity to experience this powerful classic live. The production is rarely performed outside of London and Broadwaty until now.
