RADS bring Dickensian mayhem to the stage with Bleak Expectations

Bleak Expectations promises an evening of laughter, lunacy and light-hearted Dickensian delight.

Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society (RADS) return to the stage this November with Bleak Expectations — a gloriously absurd comedy inspired by the works of Charles Dickens and based on Mark Evans’ hit BBC Radio 4 series. The show runs from Wednesday 5 to Saturday 8 November.

A riotous parody of Victorian melodrama, Bleak Expectations follows the life and misfortunes of young Pip Bin, inventor of the bin, as he battles villainous fiends, improbable twists of fate and all the delightful absurdities of Dickensian England. Expect eccentric characters, breakneck costume changes and plenty of laughter.

Director Scott Fenney described the production as “bonkers but brilliant,” adding: “This has been one of the most joyful and hilarious rehearsal periods I’ve ever experienced. The challenge will be for the cast to keep straight faces once the audience starts laughing – but with such a talented team on and off stage, it’s going to be a wonderful night out.”

Lovingly sending up classics such as Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol, the play combines witty wordplay, slapstick and affectionate chaos.

Performances take place nightly at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from box office on 01748 825252 or online.
