Escape the winter chill with a glorious summer day at the races when Ladies’ Day comes to The Georgian Theatre Royal on Saturday 21 February at 7.30pm.
Presented by The Castle Players, Amanda Whittington’s much-loved play Ladies' Day whisks audiences from the cold, repetitive grind of factory life to the colour, fizz and excitement of Royal Ascot — temporarily relocated, to York.
Ladies’ Day follows four fish-filleting friends — Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda — as they swap white coats, wellies and hairnets for dresses, heels and flamboyant fascinators. With champagne flowing and bets placed, the women find themselves confronting long-held secrets, big dreams and a friendship-testing accumulator that could change everything.
Warm-hearted, funny and deeply relatable, the play balances laugh-out-loud moments with genuine tenderness, celebrating friendship, resilience and the thrill of stepping outside the everyday.
Co-directed by Sarah Fells and Heather Armstrong, the production uses imaginative lighting and sound to transport audiences straight from the factory floor to the sun-drenched buzz of a race day. “It seemed to be an ideal choice for a winter tour — to transport audiences from a wet and wintry season to a warm summer day at the races,” said Sarah Fells.
Heather Armstrong added: “There are moments that are really beautiful, some hilariously funny, and some that are just like mates chatting. We think audiences will recognise themselves — or people they know — in the characters.”
A perfect antidote to a dark February evening, Ladies’ Day promises warmth, laughter and a feel-good night out at the theatre.
